After reading a lot of forums and build blogs it seems that fitting stalks to the Ultima is a better proposition, certainly I prefer stalks to additional switches on the dash.
Escort Mk3 stalks seem popular and I had already bought two pairs.
One second hand pair with the tails of the wiring harness and a brand new pair to comply with IVA (all components are new bar one that is built to as new specification).
I look at the different means that people have used to mount these stalks and decide to make a custom bracket.

I buy a billet of aluminium and start laying out my ideas.

I drill the four holes for the two stalks to mount to, ready to be tapped.

 
I then mill out sections for clearances etc., face off the end and mill some more clearances.

 
I enlarge the dash location to accept this stalk carrier.

 
When I set it up with the stalks and steering wheel I do not like the angles the stalks sit at, the way the stalks look, in fact I just don't like it.
Back to the drawing board.
